in bloom

Well, the Valentines project the other day at school turned out the same as usual. I think I'm beginning to realize that when your materials are construction paper, stickers, and doilies, your finished project is always gonna look like a kindergartner made it! I guess I'll still give my card to E--it's still better than buying one.

Walking into this room everyday (that's where my clothes closet is) brings a huge smile to my face. The crib makes it feel so real. I'm really happy with how the tree on the wall turned out. As much as I loved the calming blue, the pink dots reminds me more of my original inspiration--the plum blossoms on the tree we used to have out back.

This time of year makes me feel so at peace. The azaleas are on the verge of blooming, there are cherry blossoms everywhere, and I check almost everyday to see how close we are to Japanese magnolias on the trees we planted last year. Today I'm enjoying a much-needed day off (my own personal presidents day observation since we have class Monday:)), trying not to do too much--just yoga and lunch with my mom and a few errands. And then I still have the weekend ahead of me! I hope you have a restful weekend, too!

enjoying the now

As excited as I am about what's to come in May, I'm trying to cherish the present as much as I can. It's our last few months of almost 10 years with just the two of us, so I want to make the most of it! One of the things we enjoy most together is working on house projects, and the nursery has become the latest one. It's been a joint effort, with E doing the painting + installing and me sewing (and designing, of course!) This weekend, we took a huge step in clearing out the guest bedroom furniture, so it's really starting to look more like a baby's room. When it all comes together, I'll post complete photos of the space, but for now, here's what we've been working on.

We had these rattan-covered stools that were in bad shape, so I recovered them with a kind of double pillowcase cover. I LOVE the Joel Dewberry woodgrain print! Now you know what I meant when I said I was making stool covers--no, I didn't mean diapers:) as someone suggested!

And the gorgeous grey-painted furniture. This is the same fresh aire color we used in our dining room, but it's so different on the desk and rocker. My grandfather bought this rocking chair for my mom, so I'm happy to be able to use it. It'll get a new cushion soon--I'm just waiting for the foam to go on sale at Joann!

This afternoon I'm making Valentines with my international students, so I might be back with some of our creations!

progress report

Well, pretty much all of my crafting/sewing lately has been baby-related. I've made some pretty good headway on the long list of things I want to have done before her arrival in May, but the time is flying by. I try to remember to take a photo every few weeks to document my 'progress', and looking back at where I was just a few weeks ago, I realize I don't have that much longer!

16 weeks

20 weeks
24 weeks

This weekend I worked on changing the tree painted on the former guest bedroom wall to better go with the colors I'm using for baby stuff.

I think we also found a crib we like, so we're getting close to seeing if all the furniture is going to fit in this little room. I had fun with a tool on a baby furniture website and created this room layout. The bigger circles are rugs from Ikea and the little ones are some ottomans/stools I recovered (pics to come soon!)

sewing day

I'm finally posting the photos of a recent sewing day at my co-worker's house. Three of us got together to work on our own projects and admire my friend Julie's new sewing machine. There was some paper piecing, the beginnings of bar stool covers, and, for me, the last touches on my birds for the mobile from spool. Here they are, all ready to be hung:

Now we just need a crib to go under them!

Julie's cute paper-pieced dapper cat:

I think I might post some belly pics later this week:)
