Thank you all so much for the knitting advice. It has turned out to be the perfect project for right now. After a few restarts, including when Kobe took off across the yard with the knitting, but not the ball of yarn, I think I've got the basics figured out. After the Kobe mishap, I even learned how to knit in new yarn!
The color of the yarn matches the late tomatoes that I discovered in the garden. There are probably more out there now than I got all summer!
