a new home for a new project

pc35

so i finally decided to bite the bullet today and share my new blog + facebook page. don't know why i feel so nervous to do so, but if you know me, then you know photography is a big part of my life, and doing something with it has been a dream of mine for a long time. i've had a great time over the last few months putting my creative energy into this project, and i'm excited to see what's to come. i hope you'll check out at kaylajune.com and facebook.com/kaylajunephotography and follow me there!

birthday video

This year, for the first time, we decided have a big birthday party for C. For her first two birthdays, we had a small family celebration, but this year we wanted to include friends and make it a really special day for C. She was excited for days about the cupcakes and crepes, courtesy of my friend Lucie of the Little Family Crepes, but I think the biggest hit was the newly filled sandbox. I intended to shoot more video of the day, but, of course, got busy and forgot. Still, I'm happy to have these shots and memories!

pizza: check!

when i posted my resolutions at the first of the year, my uncle answered my call for a great pizza dough recipe. the one i had used in the past was probably more authentically italian, but it never came out just right. but this one is exactly what i was looking for--great taste and texture, includes whole wheat flour, and is easy
to stretch or roll out. (the most frustrating thing in the past was dough that would just spring back to its original size after i'd rolled it out.)

i've been making pizza every week or two since the beginning of the year. c's favorite is 'green pizza'--with my arugula pesto, black olives and mozzarella.

Newt's Whole Wheat Bread Machine Pizza Dough
water-80 degrees- 1 1/4c + 2 TBS
olive oil- 2 TBS
bread flour- 2c
whole wheat flour- 2c
salt- 2 tsp
brown sugar- 2 TBS
active dry yeast- 1 packet

makes 2 crusts. top and bake on a pizza stone for 10 minutes at 475.

oh, and the one pictured was topped with pesto, pears, walnuts, arugula, and bleu cheese and mozzarella.  yum.

france

as soon as my brother announced he was moving to france, i knew i wanted to visit him there.  we immediately applied for the girls' passports and renewed ours and i started dreaming.  of the food and the sights and all the photos i would take.  i imagined sneaking out by myself during nap time and taking lots of cool shots around the neighborhood.  i did manage to do this one day, but i'm slowly learning that when i'm out and about with two girls, i rarely have a hand free for holding a camera!  so i filled only one of the three memory cards i packed, but still captured some great memories.

on our first day, we walked from our apartment to cours saleya for the antiques market, continued on to castle hill, rode the elevator to the top where there was a fun playground for cora, climbed down the hill to the port, and met nick and gwen for a delicious lunch.  i had to try the warm goat cheese salad, my usual order at our local restaurant, bb's.  the nice restaurant's version had fried goat cheese croquettes that were crunchy and delicious.  earl ordered the four seasons pizza, complete with egg, two lunches in a row!

one of the best parts of the trip was where we stayed--in an apartment just behind the famous negresco hotel.  it was so convenient to have a kitchen and two bathrooms for the six of us (my parents went, too), and it was one block from the sea!  we ate dinner in almost every night, which was so relaxing after long days of sightseeing.  it was a few blocks away from nick and gwen's, so they could walk over to eat with us.  i think we'll try to find apartments like this when we travel from now on.  it sure beats a hotel room with small children!

so fun!

anticipating a fun day in the line for the monorail.

naomi doesn't look so happy here, but she was great all day, watching everything that was going on around her and then napping in the stroller.

and of course, she got her ears!

home sweet home

sometimes when i look at design blogs and see too many perfect rooms, i look around and feel discontent and start to get critical of what i have:  i wish my kitchen had white cabinets. the baseboards sure are banged up.  didn't i just vacuum?

e and i recently found the 'before' photos of our house, and it left me in awe of how far we've come.  how can i be anything but proud of the house i live in?

i've added a little context with each photo:

this banquette was built-in where our fridge now stands.

n's room!

see the one-and-only window unit that was in the dining room?  i love our central a/c.

can't believe it's even the same house.  i loved it then, but i love it even more now!

loves to paint

my cautious c was reluctant to touch things with new textures and refused to do messy activities when she was younger, but she's completely gotten over that now.  she turns every painting session into a hand printing exercise and usually winds up painting her face.  somehow, even with her huge smock, she still gets paint all over her clothes!  it's definitely her favorite indoor activity.

resolutions report

at the beginning of 2011, i decided to keep my resolutions simple and within reach, so i chose a few things that would be easy to do but would make a big difference.  one was making the bed every day, not something e and i previously paid much attention to if no one was coming over.  i've been doing it, almost every day, and it makes such a difference every time i walk in our bedroom to see that at least one room in the house is under control.

and my other success, which i'm tentatively proud of, is giving up my nail biting and picking.  this has been an official and unofficial resolution for many years, but when i saw c chewing a finger one day, i knew i had to get serious.  it's been about a month that i've left them alone, but i'm not sure how long it'll take to undo this decades-long bad habit.

for this year, my goals are:

  • to make homemade pizza every week or two, until we perfect the recipe and method
  • to eat outside on our deck at least once a week
  • to actively pursue my creative interests.  i've already registered for a photoshop class, so that's a start.  and the photo above is from a photoshoot i drug the family on.
  • to increase my core strength.  with two scary back injuries since n was born, i've realized how important these muscles are.
now that i've made these public, i have to stick to them!

holidays with kids

two months later, c still keeps saying 'trick or treating is over.'  i don't know when she'll realize christmas is over.  it is so much fun to celebrate with kids.  c loved the music, the lights, the advent calendar, the nativity, and of course, the presents.  my favorite part was when she discovered her 'playground'.

this girl could swing all day under this gorgeous sign made by her uncle.  in the back yard, she is one happy girl.
